Colombo’s restaurant scene is rather diverse. Be it American, French, Indian, Thai, Japanese or Chinese, there are ample restaurants that have mastered a given cuisine and more. Hidden somewhere in this crowded restaurant landscape is a restaurant run by Shevon Perera, who fell in love with Mongolian cuisine more than a decade ago and set out to master it.
Though ‘Mongolian Street by Shevon’ launched formally in 2018, Shevon Perera has been perfecting his modus operandi for nearly a decade. A self-taught cook who first started experimenting in the kitchen at the age of eight, Shevon is in many ways, a perfect foodie. “I first served my dishes at the Eat Street Food Festival in January 2008” Shevon said. He knew he was onto something when the official food reviewers at the event crowned him the ‘Best Vendor’. Since then, Shevon has taken his time to perfect his offering. Having participated in several food festivals and even at a few big matches such as the ‘Joe-Pete’, Shevon has successfully converted Mongolian Street into a fully-fledged caterer for home-based and corporate events.
Q: What makes ‘Mongolian Street by Shevon’ unique?
A: It comes down to two things. The first is our cuisine, and we are amongst a handful of eateries dedicated to Mongolian cuisine in Colombo. Second is our format. We are one of the pioneers of action station-based catering in Colombo.
Q: What kind of dishes are on the menu?
A: We serve both rice and noodle-based Mongolian dishes, along with a choice of meats such as prawns and chicken. The action station format allows us to be flexible, and because of it we can offer a fully-fledged catering solution to our customers. For instance, we can turn out bites for an event at concessionary rates. In addition, we offer recyclable plates and cutlery free of charge.
Q: What does it cost to have an action station at a private event?
A: We charge only Rs. 690 per person for an event, and that gets you an action station with a specialist cook, Mongolian rice and noodles with your choice of meat or seafood, and plates, glasses and cutlery as well.
Q: How have you adapted to the post-COVID19 environment?
A: I would like to think we have adapted quite well. Most restaurants looked to delivery to keep their kitchen fires burning given the dampening effect of the post-lockdown directives issued by the authorities. For our part, we started offering delivery within Colombo. Our brand new combo packs can feed a family, and are now offered on a pre-order basis with door step delivery. A typical combo pack on our menu is sufficient for four adults and prices start from Rs. 2000 upwards. You also have the option of adding a large portion of Hot Butter Cuttlefish, Garlic Mushrooms and Chicken Fried Rice cooked in Mongolian sauce. When compared with the other options out there, I think that’s quite a good deal!
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: We have a plan to open up an outlet, hopefully by the end of this year. That will allow us to offer dine-in and take away options to our customers. We also want to develop the capacity and reach of our action-stations, so that we can cater to the increased demand from our loyal customers.
Mongolian Street by Shevon offers authentic Asian Street Fusion, and offers a range of signature Mongolian dishes created using unique ingredients and flavours. An action station can be arranged to liven up private events and parties, and you can also per-order meals that can feed and satisfy an entire family.
